SME of the Week: Roborace

Congratulations to Roborace who are our SME of the week. The Roborace driverless car has become the first ever fully autonomous race car to officially complete a hillclimb after running at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Using cameras and LiDar sensors, The Roborace driverless car can map a 360-degree vision of its environment. That corresponds to the car’s GPS position and allows it to then proceed on detectable drivable surfaces.

While it has completed unofficial runs up the 1.16-mile route, Robocar made its first public attempt at the hillclimb in front of 55,000 spectators more recently.

Roborace is the world’s first competition for human and machine teams, using both self-driving and manually-controlled cars. It is a new platform for brands, organisations and individuals to test the development of their automated driving systems. Race formats will feature new forms of immersive entertainment to engage the public’s imagination. Through sport, innovations in autonomous technology will be advanced, accelerating improvements to road safety.
