The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) has issued a call for a real-time data visualisation platform demonstrator (the Visualisation platform) that operates at a national scale for internal use by the Department for Transport (DfT).
The first Road Investment Strategy, covering the period 2015-2020 (‘RIS 1’), was issued in March 2015, and set out an ambitious £15 billion programme of investment over the next 5 years. The Department has already begun the lengthy process of developing the next Road Investment Strategy (‘RIS 2’). The visualisation of data is becoming increasingly possible and important to understanding transport, making policy and investment decisions, and engaging with stakeholders.
The Department wants to explore alternative ways to use existing sources of data to improve the visualisation and communication of information about roads investment, and support decisions about the development of better data visualisation capability in DfT.
This is seen as having significant potential to support better communication of the impacts of road investment set out in Road Investment Strategies, alongside ongoing DfT work to examine how the
DfT can provide a ‘richer picture’ of information to underpin appraisal and investment decisions and to present data in more visual, engaging and impactful ways.
An important capability to be investigated is the way in which different data sets can be combined to provide new insights into the information.
This is a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to demonstrate the benefits of their technology to senior policy makers within the DfT. The vision that the TSC and DfT have for the Visualisation platform, information required for the application process and the assessment criteria are detailed below. This document should be read in conjunction with the Requirements document.
This call is open for applications from Wednesday 20th January 2016 until close of business Monday 8th February 2016. Applications should be made by completing the attached application form and emailing the completed form and other supporting Appendices to firstname.lastname@example.org with the title ‘Data Visualisation platform Call’. In the event that the attachments are too large to permit emailing them, sending a link to a file transfer service such as WeTransfer is also acceptable. Please clearly label any additional information provided in the Appendices to aid understanding.
In the event that any information in the application is unclear, answers to follow-up questions may be requested. Any follow-up questions will be emailed to applicants by Wednesday 10th February and responses will be required by close of business on Thursday 11th February. Selection of the successful application will take place on Friday 12th February and applicants will be notified at the earliest opportunity.
