Introducing the CAVLab

In October 2016, the Transport Systems Catapult concluded the LUTZ Pathfinder project when it tested a fully autonomous vehicle in public for the first time. Using the knowledge, experience and assets gained from the project, we are now able to offer an open research and development platform for UK businesses and research organisations.

The CAVLab enables partners to develop, test and demonstrate their technologies in conjunction with other CAV subsystems in our open-source system. This means developers can focus on the core technology they are interested in, such as new sensors or algorithms, rather than the systems which surround it.

A flexible vehicle platform

The CAVLab is centred around our world-famous LUTZ Pod vehicles which offer a modular platform for the testing of CAV technologies. They are equipped with a varied array of sensors that give researchers a wide range of options to develop their algorithms. These vehicles are capable of eight hours of operation and can travel up to 24km/h.

Features include:

  • A modular Robotic Operating System (ROS) based architecture for sensor interfacing and vehicle control
  • High precision GPS coupled with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
  • Three lidar units covering 270° perception at front of vehicle
  • A stereo trinocular camera for imaging and range finding
  • A ‘Mobileye’ camera developer edition for object recognition
  • Separate ‘core vehicle’ and ‘autonomous control’ touchscreen interfaces
  • Programmable coloured LED wheel lighting for indicating intent to other road users
  • Wi-Fi accessible data recording & storage

The TSC are also developing a Basic Autonomous Control System.  This system has each of the typical modules that are needed in the development of a fully-autonomous vehicles constructed in a simple fashion.

 

 

 

 

Safety, Legal Approval and Data

Thanks to our close relationship with Milton Keynes City council and our experience on the LUTZ Pathfinder project we are in a unique position to facilitate the testing of autonomous technologies.

Undertaking your project with the TSC’s CAVLab will allow you to benefit from:

  • An Experimental Traffic Order giving access to public shared space areas for real world testing.
  • Use of a separate test area with no public access.
  • A safety framework developed for the LUTZ Pathfinder program along with trial management procedures
  • Expertise in secure data management and data privacy.
